h9 and h11 shaft tolerance table
Read size limits for transmission shafts and bright round, square or hexagonal bars. Specify the tolerance together with the product standard and delivery condition.

Reading the h9 and h11 limits
For a shaft tolerance designated by lowercase h, the upper deviation is zero. The size may therefore be below, but not above, the nominal size within the specified tolerance band. h9 has a narrower band than h11. Uppercase H denotes a hole tolerance and is not interchangeable with h.
| Nominal size (mm) | h9 | h11 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ≤ d ≤ 3 | 0 / −0.025 mm | 0 / −0.060 mm |
| 3 < d ≤ 6 | 0 / −0.030 mm | 0 / −0.075 mm |
| 6 < d ≤ 10 | 0 / −0.036 mm | 0 / −0.090 mm |
| 10 < d ≤ 18 | 0 / −0.043 mm | 0 / −0.110 mm |
| 18 < d ≤ 30 | 0 / −0.052 mm | 0 / −0.130 mm |
| 30 < d ≤ 50 | 0 / −0.062 mm | 0 / −0.160 mm |
| 50 < d ≤ 80 | 0 / −0.074 mm | 0 / −0.190 mm |
| 80 < d ≤ 120 | 0 / −0.087 mm | 0 / −0.220 mm |
| 120 < d ≤ 180 | 0 / −0.100 mm | 0 / −0.250 mm |
| 180 < d ≤ 200 | 0 / −0.115 mm | 0 / −0.290 mm |
Choosing by product form
- Cold-drawn round bar: h9, h10 or h11 must be agreed with the producer for the product ordered.
- Square and hexagonal bars: confirm the requested h class against the product standard and producer acceptance.
- Peeled bar: confirm diameter tolerance and availability for the specified delivery.
- Ground shafts: classes such as h7, h8 or h9 may be specified; confirm the complete order requirements.
What to specify when ordering
- Steel grade
- Nominal size
- Tolerance class
- Surface condition
- Straightness requirement
- Inspection certificate specification
Example: a 25 mm shaft
A nominal diameter of 25 mm belongs to the range above 18 mm and up to and including 30 mm. Because the upper deviation for h is zero, the maximum diameter is 25.000 mm.
| Designation | Lower limit | Upper limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ø25 h9 | 24.948 mm | 25.000 mm |
| Ø25 h11 | 24.870 mm | 25.000 mm |
The boundary matters: 30 mm belongs to 18 < d ≤ 30, not the next row. These size limits do not define surface roughness, straightness, roundness or a complete shaft/hole fit.
Size standards and delivery standards
ISO 286-2 describes size tolerance classes for holes and shafts. Technical delivery conditions for non-alloy and alloy bright engineering steels are covered by ISO 683-7:2023 within its scope. EN 10278:2023 addresses dimensions and tolerances for stainless and other special steels within its own scope. Do not apply an old catalogue reference as a universal current standard.
