SAE 1040 / C40 carbon steel: designation and ordering
SAE 1040 and C40 belong to different designation systems. A similar carbon-steel application is not sufficient for substitution; retain the exact standard, any grade suffix and the specified delivery condition.
Clarify whether the part will be heat treated after machining and supply the drawing grade, section and final cut dimensions. Do not silently replace C40 with C45 or C50.

Lucefin distinguishes C40E / 1.1186 from C40 / 1.0511. Its 1040 cross-reference is a comparison, not permission to apply C40E properties to all SAE 1040 material.
